City of Atlanta Black History Month Celebration

March 4, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EST

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the Mayor’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will highlight the Past, Present & Future during an honoring ceremony for the sacrifices of those that performed convict labor at the Bellwood Quarry.  Pulitzer Prize-winning Douglas Blackmon (Author of “Slavery by Another Name”) will share history on the practice of convict labor at the quarry along with a host of others giving context to this event.

As a focus on the present, the event will highlight Atlanta’s own “Killer Mike” and his connection to ‘Driller Mike’ as the city built a 30-day backup water supply at the park.  We will complete our celebration with a focus on the future of our children and our hopes for them to build a more equitable & sustainable future through technology & skilled trades. Nathaniel Smith, who sits on the Mayor’s transition team, will make remarks about environmental justice.
